About the role 

As a Head of Material Technologies, you will be part of the Business Unit (BU) Product at Battolyser Systems, reporting directly to the CTO. In this pivotal role, you will be leading the fundamental research of advanced material sciences for the Battolyser system. The main focus is the electrodes, but you also lead the Materials Team that supports product development more generally. You take overall responsibility for the company’s Intellectual Property (IP) strategy and support product development through providing expertise to Simultaneous Engineering Teams.

 

Your main responsibilities are: 

  • Lead and Inspire a High-Performing Team: Guide and develop a multidisciplinary team of 8 experts dedicated to pioneering electrode materials research, focusing on advanced compositions such as iron- and nickel-based alloys, to unlock unprecedented performance and durability. 

  • Define and Execute a Visionary Technology Roadmap: Set and steer the strategic direction for electrode innovation, leveraging advanced materials like iron-doped nickel, nanostructures, and 3D architectures for optimum Battolyser performance 

  • Foster Strategic Partnerships for Development: Support the Electrode Program Manager expertise and testing capabilities to develop these electrodes by specialist suppliers with  

  • Ensure Excellence in Testing and Validation: Work closely with the Lab Manager to uphold rigorous testing standards, ensuring experiments are safely conducted, results are reliable, and findings contribute to robust product validation processes. 

  • Advance the Full System through Materials Expertise: Oversee the Materials Team, providing technical leadership to address system-wide challenges, including material qualification, durability testing, and cross-functional problem-solving. 

  • Drive Strategic Intellectual Property Development: Craft and implement a forward-thinking IP strategy, protecting innovation through patents and safeguarding collaborative ventures with joint-development agreements and strategic partnerships. 

  • Build and Strengthen Knowledge Networks: Cultivate strong relationships with leading academic and industrial partners, including TU Delft, TNO, and cutting-edge materials companies, to stay ahead of emerging trends and foster collaborative innovation.

Job requirements

About you 

You are a scientist at heart with strong material science background able to develop and manage multiyear research programs. You thrive in innovative environments and are creative in bringing together internal and external expertise to overcome design obstacles. You are detail-oriented, collaborative, and committed to delivering high-quality work on time. Your communication skills allow you to effectively lead a diverse team of technologist and scientists.

More specifically, an ideal combination of background, skills, and experiences is: 

  • Over 12 years’ experience in material science, preferably with a focus on fuel cell, electrolysers or battery technology electrode technology. 

  • Global network with knowledge institutes and innovative companies.  

  • Hands-on experience in developing, writing and delivering patens. 

  • Team leadership enabling diverse technical experts in personal and professional development and, to deliver to overall company business plans.
