About the role
As a Senior Electrode Development Engineer, you will be part of the Electrode Development Team within the Product Business Unit, led by our Chief Technology Officer. This role offers the chance to lead and innovate within our electrode development efforts, crucial to our mission of delivering 100% green hydrogen to the world. In this role, you’ll design and execute research programs to develop our Battolyser hybrid battery-electrolysis electrodes for current and future product generations.

Your main responsibilities are:

  • Translating product specifications into electrode design requirements and establishing a development plan for both short-term and long-term projects.
  • Defining and carrying out research and development activities, including experimental design, testing, and validation.
  • Optimize electrode fabrication processes and contribute to scaling techniques from lab-scale to pilot and full-scale manufacturing.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing teams to ensure smooth transitions and scalability of new electrode designs.
  • Developing and managing a portfolio of electrode specifications and protocols to ensure consistent performance validation.
  • Overseeing laboratory testing to ensure high quality and safety in research outcomes.
  • Collaborating with knowledge institutions like TU Delft and TNO, as well as with innovative industry partners, to stay at the forefront of electrode science.
  • Identifying key intellectual property, drafting, and filing patents to strengthen the company’s competitive edge.

Job requirements

About you
To succeed in this role, you bring extensive experience in industrial Research & Development (R&D) setting with deep expertise in battery and/or electrolysis electrodes and materials science. You thrive in a fast-growing environment where you can drive innovation, work cross-functionally, and tackle new challenges. You have a collaborative spirit and take ownership of your work.

The best combination of background, skills, and experiences is:

  • PhD with 5+ years experience or MSc with 10+ years experience in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Electrochemical Engineering, or a related field, preferably with industrial experience.
  • Strong expertise in electrochemistry, including electrode preparation and testing for electrolysers or batteries at a relevant scale (~20 cm² or larger).
  • Proven track record in managing R&D projects and ability to drive product development across research, design, realization, and validation phases.
  • Experience with patenting and intellectual property management.
  • Adaptability to a dynamic scale-up environment with a focus on teamwork and handling peak workloads.
